What is left in the unit at the deadline becomes someone else's problem to remove — so the last sweep matters as much as the load:
- Donate, do not abandon. The City of Gainesville's Zero Waste list includes: Salvation Army Family Store, 55 Northwest 23rd Avenue; Haven Hospice Attic, 300 Northwest 8th Avenue; Humane Society Thrift, 4205 Northwest 6th Street; St. Francis House, 413 South Main Street; the Repurpose Project, 1920 Northeast 23rd Avenue; and Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 2317 Southwest 13th Street. Call ahead — drop-off hours are theirs. The full list is in our Gainesville student moving checklist.
- Bulk pickup will not save you today. The City of Gainesville and Alachua County offer free curbside bulk pickup — sofas, mattresses, dressers, bed frames — to residents with curbside service, but it runs on your regular collection day, and the city changed most collection days in October 2026. If today is not your day, a sofa at the curb is not a plan. Appliances are by appointment only.
- Utilities. If Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) — the city-owned utility for electric, water, wastewater, natural gas, and telecom — serves the unit in your name, your stop-service date should be today or your lease's handoff date.
- Keys and proof. Return keys and fobs exactly where your instructions say, and photograph the empty unit and the returned keys.
