UF Move Cycle Guide

Moving around the University of Florida (UF) calendar? There are four windows that matter: the mid-August fall move-in (the big one), early January spring move-in, the June/July medical-resident relocation surge, and the summer sublet shuffle between leases. This guide lays out the verified dates for each window, how on-campus move-in logistics actually work, how the off-campus August-to-July lease cycle drives everything, and what to book when — so you move once, on time, without surprises.

The UF Calendar at a Glance (Verified Dates)

Fall 2026 classes: August 20 – December 2, 2026
Fall on-campus move-in: Began August 15, 2026 (per news coverage; UF Housing runs it as a staggered multi-day event)
Spring 2027 classes: January 11 – April 21, 2027
Spring Break 2027: March 13–20 (classes resume March 22)
Summer C 2027 classes: May 10 – August 6, 2027
Residency training start: July 1 (matched residents relocate in June/July)
Two patterns run through everything below. First, UF Housing manages 24 buildings and 8,021 rooms — in a representative year, more than 7,800 students moved in over a three-day event using hourly staggered move-in appointments, so on-campus move-in is an orchestrated traffic operation, not a free-for-all. Second, the off-campus Gainesville norm is a 12-month lease running roughly August to July, which concentrates most of the city's student moving into one tight turnover window.

Fall Move-In: Mid-August (The Big One)

On campus. Fall 2026 move-in began August 15, 2026, a few days before classes started on August 20 — expect a similar early-to-mid-August pattern. The logistics that matter on the day:
- UF designates building-specific unloading zones. You display an unloading pass on the dash, unload, and then must promptly move the vehicle to Parking Garage V and use a shuttle to get back. Vehicles left unattended in unloading zones may be ticketed or towed, and attendants monitor the lots.
- A UF parking decal is required to park on campus — purchase it at taps.ufl.edu before move-in week so nobody in the convoy is improvising.
- Students select hourly move-in appointments in typical years. Your appointment window is real; arrive in it.
- Move-in has crept earlier over the years (August 17 in 2023, a compressed two-day window in 2026 per news analysis), so don't assume last year's schedule — check UF Housing each year.
Off campus. The August turnover is the dominant moving event in Gainesville. Verified timing anchors: standard terms like Alight Gainesville's August 15, 2026–July 30, 2027 (paid in 12 equal installments); first month's rent due August 1 on KNR townhome leases; first installments due August 1 at Varsity House. Expect heavy demand on crews, trucks, and containers across the first two weeks of August.
Parents' tip: the August window is peak season. If you're hiring moving labor, the difference between a calm move and a scramble is booking before July.

Spring Move-In: Early January

Spring 2027 classes start January 11, 2027. No UF-published on-campus hall-opening date for spring was found — check UF Housing directly for the 2027 spring move-in date rather than assuming a date from a forum. Spring is a smaller move: returning students and new admits moving into halls and off-campus units between semesters. Same unloading rules apply on campus (unloading pass on dash, then Parking Garage V), and off-campus, some units turn over as December graduates vacate.

The June/July Resident Surge

Separate from the student cycle, Gainesville's medical district produces its own summer moving wave. Match Day for the 2026 Main Residency Match was Friday, March 20, 2026 — 53,373 applicants registered and 38,354 matched to postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). NRMP rules require Match participants to be able to enter graduate medical education on July 1, so newly matched residents relocate in the June/July window.
If you're a resident matched to Gainesville, target June or early July — before the August student turnover eats every crew and container in town. The moves cluster around the medical district: UF Health Shands Hospital (1600 SW Archer Rd) and the condo communities along the Archer Road corridor, plus North Florida Regional Medical Center (6500 Newberry Rd) on the Newberry Road corridor. Moving to Gainesville for residency has its own timeline — see our residency guide when it publishes.

Summer: Sublets and Between-Lease Moves

Summer C 2027 runs May 10–August 6, 2027. With standard leases ending around July 30 and new ones starting mid-August, students in summer classes often end up moving twice — once out of the old place in late July, once into the new one in August — or into short summer sublets. These are the classic labor-only moves: a bedroom's worth of furniture, a quick load and unload, often into storage for the gap weeks. If you're covering a July-to-August gap, decide on storage early; units near campus fill as leases expire.

What to Book When

Work backward from your window:
- September–October (the year before): leasing season. The lease cycle for August 2026–July 2027 opened in September 2025 — popular complexes start renewal sign-ups weeks after move-in, and the best floor plans go first. Sign your lease before you think about movers.
- Spring: if you're in the August window, this is when to price labor. The August–July cycle concentrates demand into a tight window, and booking early is the standard advice across the market.
- For residents: start looking the week after Match Day in mid-March. June/July moves near the hospitals book up as that year's class locks in housing.
- One month out: confirm your complex's move-day policy — elevator reservations, loading-dock or garage access, and move-day parking rules. These vary by building and were not verified per complex, so get them from your leasing office in writing.
- One week out: buy the UF parking decal if you need campus parking (taps.ufl.edu). Stage boxes. Confirm your crew time.
- Day of: unloading pass on the dash, unload, vehicle to Parking Garage V, shuttle back. Keep valuables, medications, and lease paperwork in the car you keep with you.

FAQ

When is UF fall move-in?
Fall 2026 classes began August 20, 2026, and on-campus move-in began August 15, 2026, per news coverage — UF Housing runs it as a staggered multi-day event with hourly appointments. Off-campus, the August turnover centers on the first two weeks of the month (terms commonly start August 1 or August 15).
How do on-campus unloading zones work?
UF designates building-specific unloading zones for move-in. Display your unloading pass on the dash, unload, then promptly move the vehicle to Parking Garage V and take the shuttle back. Vehicles left unattended in unloading zones may be ticketed or towed, and attendants monitor the lots.
Do I need a parking decal for move-in?
Yes — a UF parking decal is required to park on campus generally. Purchase it at taps.ufl.edu before move-in week.
When should I start looking for an apartment for next fall?
The leasing cycle runs far ahead of the school year: leases for August 2026–July 2027 opened in September 2025, and popular complexes start renewal sign-ups with current residents just weeks after move-in. Start looking in the fall — the best floor plans get claimed first.
I'm moving to Gainesville in January. What's different?
Spring 2027 classes start January 11, 2027. No UF-published spring hall-opening date was found, so confirm the 2027 spring move-in date with UF Housing. It's a smaller move than fall — returning students and new admits — but the same on-campus unloading rules apply.
I'm a resident starting July 1. When should I move?
June or early July. Match results come out in mid-March, and you need to be in place for the July 1 training start — book labor before the August student turnover compounds demand, especially near UF Health Shands (1600 SW Archer Rd) and North Florida Regional Medical Center (6500 Newberry Rd).
What does a labor-only move include?
Our movers load and unload your truck, trailer, or portable container — you provide and drive the equipment, and you're the carrier. It's priced at $75 per mover per hour with a 2-mover minimum and a 3-hour minimum (2 movers $150/hr, 3 movers $225/hr, 4 movers $300/hr), with a one-hour deposit refundable with 48+ hours' notice.
What should I double-check with my apartment complex?
Elevator reservations, loading-dock or garage access, and move-day parking — rules vary by building and we couldn't verify them per complex. Get your complex's policy in writing before move day so paid crew hours aren't spent waiting.
